Villa Matakia: Toscany found in the Aegean

“Villa Matakia” is definitely not what to expect when you imagine a home in the Cyclades. Located in the village of Ano Potamia, one of the most fertile parts of Naxos, this old stone mansion with the big verandas and a garden with lemon trees surrounded by cypresses, reminds more of a cottage house in Tuscany rather than a house in Naxos. Yet this is what makes it so special. The decoration is made with respect to the island’s folklore history, using iron beds, huge clay pots, and wooden ceilings among other traditional details, whereas the exterior spaces can beat even the most amazing sea views. Imagine taking breakfast under the shade of a pergola of vine leaves while listening to bird and cicada singing. If you are looking for a local stay and love nature, then “Villa Matakia” is the place for you. The village of Ano Potamia is away from the touristic path, with a very vivid local color. The tavern of “Pigi” at the entrance of the village is very famous for its traditional Naxian dishes. If you are up to some hiking, you can follow the signs and visit the beautiful neighboring villages of “Mesi Potamia”, “Kato Potamia”, and “Melanes”. And remember, you are always on an island and although the beach is not right across the street, it is not more than 20’ away by car!

Ploes, Cycladic minimalism in Plaka beach

Sometimes decisions are meant to be easy. If your number one priority is to have one of the most amazing beaches on your doorstep and you like the simple and minimal design but don’t want to pay a fortune, then “Ploes” studios is the place to host your Greek holiday. “Ploes” seaside houses are located in Plaka beach. The complex consists of 3 maisonettes and 2 rooms that can host from 2 to 7 people. The building follows the “less is more” principles, highlighting the simple lines of the Cycladic architecture. Most of the furniture such as sofas and beds are built-in and part of the construction and only a few decorative details like the wooden mirrors or an oak table are detachable, adding a warmer tone in the space. Overall “Ploes” stand out for their minimal, modern, and Cycladic interior design in addition to their very advantageous location.

Living in this place will make you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere and at the same time, in the heart of everything. Ayiopetras’ architecture and design were based on an open dialogue of the past and the future. Unique pieces of antique furniture blend in with minimal spaces.
