There is a wide range of hotels, from luxurious five-star hotels with spa facilities to budget hostels. Here are some tips on choosing the best hotel in Athens.
Stay in the city center
Most hotels are concentrated in central regions of the city, such as Plaka, Monastiraki, Thission, Syntagma square, and Panepistimiou Avenue. These areas are within walking distance from the Acropolis and other archaeological sites and museums. They also give good access to metro and bus stations and have many restaurants, shops, and bars.
Plaka, Monastiraki, and Thission are particularly popular places to stay among travelers, as they are charming neighborhoods right below the Acropolis Hill, with many hotels for every budget. Most upscale hotels in Athens are found around Syntagma square, in Kolonaki quarter and along Panepistimiou Avenue, the most central spots of the city. A budget hotel in Athens is usually found in the quarters of Koukaki and Monastiraki.
Hotel in Athens Riviera
If you would prefer not to stay downtown, but still have easy access to the museums and ancient sites of the Greek capital, you can book a hotel in the so-called Athenian Riviera, which has developed a lot over the last years. The coastal regions of Vouliagmeni, Voula, Kalamaki, and Alimos offer some of the most beautiful resorts, with easy access to sandy, organized beaches and a good variety of restaurants and cafes.
There are many seaside hotels in Glyfada and Faliro as well, which are vibrant neighborhoods with many shops and restaurants. Hotels in these coastal regions are more upscale and usually offer pool, spa facilities and a room with a view of the sea.
There is regular public transport by bus or tram from these areas to the city center, which is 30-40 minutes away. Many travelers choose to stay in these regions to combine a visit to Athens with relaxing beach holidays.
