What to see

parga castle

Pargas’ history is long and full of glory. The Venetian Castle of Parga is one of the most beautiful monuments of Parga in Greece. It was built in the 11th century upon a hill by Pargas’ residents because they wanted to be protected from pirates’ ( and not only) invasions. This castle was built and rebuilt several times throughout its history. Nowadays, it is considered to be a great example of Venetian architecture, though it also has details from different architectural styles, such as Ottoman architecture. The view from this castle is breathtaking and it definitely worth a visit.
In Parga, there is, also, the Necromanteion of Ephyra. Necromanteion (literally: Oracle of Death) is a temple dedicated to the ancient Greek god of the Underworld, Hades and his wife, Persephone.
Trivia Alert: According to the myth, the doors leading to the realm of death are located near the Acheron river. Both the ancient Greek historian Herodotus and the epic poet Homer had written about the doors of the Underworld and archaeological research was based upon their similar descriptions.
