Are you getting ready for your holidays and searching for the best things to do in Santorini?
No worries, we got you covered!
One of the best things about Santorini (apart from the fact that it looks like a postcard) is that it combines many different styles. From cosmopolitan vacations to totally fun and relaxing activities, Santorini has it all!
There’s a whole bunch of things to do in Santorini. From sightseeing to watersports and from wine tasting to swimming, the island has a lot to offer in terms of activities.
So, are you ready to discover the best things to do in Santorini?
1. Visit Ancient Thera
Are you a history buff?
Then, one of the best things to do in Santorini is to visit the ancient town of Thera! Located on a hill above Perissa beach, approximately 13km from Fira, Ancient Thera is one of the top archaeological sites in Santorini.
Ancient Thera is open to the public and can be reached by bus. There are organized bus tours to Ancient Thera, although at the end of the route some walking up and down the hill is required. The view will reward you, though! Quite frankly, the view from Ancient Thera down to the Aegean Sea and the southern coast of Santorini is just breathtaking!
Wandering the town of Ancient Thera, you’ll find many interesting spots, such as the Agora and the Necropolis (cemetery). What’s more, several findings from excavations on the site are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Fira, the island’s capital.
2. Do a sunset sailing tour
Well, this is a must!
Doing a sunset sailing cruise around Santorini island is a unique experience, so get ready for many “jaw to the floor moments”!
The best part?
Some tours offer dinner and drinks, while others do a more private trip with a few passengers. Most of the boats depart early in the afternoon, tour around the caldera and make a stop for a plunge at the Red Beach or another beach in Santorini. After that, visitors get the chance to marvel at the breathtaking Santorini sunset from the sea. Watching the sun falling into the horizon line from the sea is a dreamy experience!
Tip: If you’re planning to pop the question, a sunset tour offers the most magical setting to do so!
3. Attend Megaron Gyzi Festival
Megaron Gyzi Festival is one of the hottest events in Mykonos!
Megaron Gyzi Festival is a music festival that takes place in Megaron Gyzi mansion in Fira, every summer, during the first three weeks of August. It hosts many Greek and international musicians and songwriters, mainly focusing on jazz, classical or vocal music. Parallel events include art exhibitions, lectures, and theatrical performances.
The best part?
All events have free entrance. So, if you’re into music events, don’t give it a miss!
4. Do watersports
Given that Santorini is the most popular Greek island, most of its beaches are organized with sunbeds, umbrellas, seaside taverns, and beach bars. But, that’s not all. Many of them also have water sports facilities!
Perissa, Kamari and Perivolos, are some of the beaches in Santorini that have water sports facilities, such as water ski, ringos, bananas, and many more! Spending a day at the beach, doing watersports is one of the most fun things to do in Santorini!
5. Swim in Cape Columbo and Eros Beach
It’s not a secret: the lunar beaches of Santorini are one of their kind!
But, even though Santorini is an island with famous beaches, especially on the southern side, there are some hidden spots to swim that remain unknown to mass visitors. Exploring unique beaches like Cape Columbo or Eros beach is a great experience to have in Santorini.
Eros beach is located on the coastal line of Vlychada, 9 km south of Fira. This is a beautiful, calm and secluded beach surrounded by impressive cliffs.
Cape Columbo is located near Oia, 10 km from Fira. This is probably the most isolated beach of the entire island, thus perfect for those who seek privacy.
In contrast to Eros beach, Cape Columbo is not organized, so we suggest you take some snacks with you. What’s more, the most active underwater crater of Santorini is located close to this beach, making the water very hot. Due to its secluded location, this beach attracts a lot of nudists.
6. Do scuba diving
It’s time for adventure!
Diving in the Aegean Sea is an exciting thing to do in Santorini!
Even if you have never tried scuba diving before, there are many diving centers in Santorini that offer courses for all levels, from novice to professionals. These diving centers also organize diving trips around the island, offering the unique experience to dive at the famous volcano of Santorini, ancient shipwrecks, rare underwater caves, and reefs.
Can you think of a better activity to do during your holidays in Santorini?
7. Dance all night long
Although Santorini is not famous for its party scene, there are many hot spots for a night out on the island. The spot with the most vivid nightlife in Santorini is Fira, the island’s capital. There, visitors will find many bars and clubs along the narrow streets.
Some popular bars for a drink in Fira are Enigma Club, Casablanca Soul, and Tango Bar. In general, bars close at around 2-3 am while clubs stay open all night long until 5-6 am!
Nice bars are also found in other locations around the island, such as Kamari and Perissa, but Fira is the ultimate hot spot for a night out!
8. Visit the Santorini Arts Factory
Located right on Vlychada Beach, Santorini Arts Factory is a newly-established (2014) museum and cultural center, which is housed in an old tomato (!) factory.
The museum’s exhibition includes processing machinery dating back to 1890, hand-written books about tomato, old tools, the first labels of the tomato factory, as well as audiovisual material with narrations of people who worked there.
During summer, Santorini Arts Factory hosts many cultural events, such as concerts, lectures and theatre performances.
9. Do a wine tour in Santo winery
Santorini is famous for its wine produce!
Therefore, it’s not a surprise that there are many wineries scattered around the island. Santo Wines, which is located just outside Pyrgos village, is among the most famous wineries in Santorini! Its quality wine production and the fantastic view of the caldera make it a must place to visit.
This winery organizes wine tours at its premises, which will give you the chance to introduce yourself to the local wine culture. It also has a shop with many traditional products!
Fact: The view from Santo Wines is so beautiful that the winery’s terrace is a popular wedding spot in Santorini.
